Drilling for Daylight – A new Transparency for the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg

The nine-sided assembly hall is the core of the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart and received a clear new design. The concept was to radically change the atmosphere of the formerly dull space while respecting the original architectural characteristics. Translucent walls and a luminous ceiling give a bright and airy feel to the space.
Following the project brief “fundamental reconstruction and remodelling of the assembly hall for natural lighting”, the building’s roof was perforated to introduce a multitude of circular openings in the ceiling: Large “light cones” and smaller “light cylinders” allow daylight to enter the otherwise fully enclosed space.
The purpose of the “light cones” is to optimize daylight intake and to ensure a visual relationship to the sky. The sizes and positions of the skylights were carefully calculated and integrated into the existing ceiling structure, so that any seated person has an unobstructed view of the sky. The smaller skylights exclusively serve to backlight the luminous ceiling creating a pleasant and homogenous illumination. All skylight openings are flush with the new roof covering as “fifth façade” create a remarkable effect for the nocturnal city scape.
An innovative artificial lighting concept supports the unique daylight design, forming a perfect symbiosis with the incoming daylight by means of a colour adaptive lighting control system.
